Guidelines for On-Campus Environmental Graphics

Texas Christian University is committed to maintaining a cohesive, attractive and accessible campus environment. Environmental graphics play an important role in wayfinding, storytelling, branding, donor recognition and campus experience.

The purpose of these guidelines is to ensure that all on-campus environmental graphics:

  • Align with TCU’s brand standards and institutional values
  • Support a consistent and high-quality campus visual environment
  • Comply with safety, accessibility and regulatory requirements
  • Are appropriately reviewed, approved, installed and maintained

This guidelines cover standards and procedures for the appropriate use of environmental graphics to protect the integrity of the campus environment.

Terms to Know

Environmental Graphics
Visual elements integrated into buildings and physical spaces — either interior or exterior — that communicate information, identity or experience. This includes, but is not limited to signage, murals, wall graphics, floor and window graphics, banners, donor recognition displays, wayfinding systems, transit wraps, vinyl and concrete applications (such as stair graphics) and interactive installations.

Permanent Graphics
Graphics intended for long-term or ongoing display, such as building-mounted interior or exterior signage.

Temporary Graphics
Graphics installed for a limited duration, such as temporary exhibits or promotional displays (e.g., light post banners, stair decals, concrete decals).

Guidelines

Approval Required
All on-campus environmental graphics, whether interior or exterior and whether temporary or permanent, must receive prior approval from both TCU Facilities (placement and fabrication) and TCU Marketing & Communication (content and design) before fabrication or installation. If the environmental graphics involve donor-related information, TCU Advancement must review content prior to fabrication and installation.

Design & Brand Standards
Environmental graphics must comply with TCU brand standards including approved colors, typography, logos, tone and messaging. Graphics must be professionally printed and installed, and designs must be consistent with the architectural character and purpose of the space. Environmental graphics in certain locations or large-size graphics must be designed by or reviewed by TCU Marketing & Communication (MarComm) prior to fabrication and installation.

Location & Installation
TCU Facilities must be notified and approve the location of environmental graphics before works begins. Graphics must be installed in a manner that does not damage buildings, interfere with building systems, obstruct sightlines or egress or create safety hazards. Exterior graphics must withstand environmental conditions and meet applicable building and safety codes.

Accessibility & Compliance
All environmental graphics must comply with applicable accessibility standards including the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) as well as local, state and federal regulations.

Content Standards
Content displayed in environmental graphics must support the mission and values of the University and may not include commercial advertising, political advocacy or content inconsistent with University policies unless expressly authorized by MarComm.

Maintenance & Removal
The sponsoring college, department or unit is responsible for the condition, upkeep and timely removal of approved environmental graphics. Graphics that are damaged, outdated or no longer approved may be removed at the University’s discretion.

Temporary Installations
Temporary environmental graphics must include a defined installation and removal timeline as part of the approval process by TCU Facilities.

Enforcement

Environmental graphics installed without approval or that do not comply with this policy or associated standards may be removed by TCU Facilities without notice. Costs associated with removal, repair or restoration may be charged to the responsible department, organization or individual.
